history

The name Lanao is derived from the word Ranao from the dialect Maranao, which means something like lake dwellers . This refers to the indigenous people of the area who settled the land around Lake Lanao, which is located in the center of today's province of Lanao del Sur . This originally belonged together with Lanao del Norte to a large province of Lanao.

The Malay-Arab tribe of the Maranos, coming from the south, settled in the area long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Despite many attempts by the Spanish to Christianize the Maranos, they have remained true to their religion and tradition to this day. The Spanish colonial power was also unable to enforce all violent attempts to expel the Muslims and sustainably colonize the area.

On July 4, 1959, the former province of Lanao was divided into the provinces of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur with Republic Act No. 2228 . At that time, Iligan City was named the capital of Lanao del Norte.

On June 24, 1982, the seat of the provincial administration was moved to the administrative municipality Tubod , which is still the seat of government of the province.
