mythology

There is a legend about how the falls got their name. After that there were two beautiful sisters who lived near the falls. The younger was called Maria, the older Cristina. Both loved each other and shared everything. They loved their neighbors as much as they loved themselves. As word got around about their beauty, many men came to propose marriage to them, but the siblings turned them all back.

Now there was an unfortunate son of a sultan who lived near Lake Lanao and simply couldn't find the woman for life. He often traveled around the lake, and one day he came to the falls and saw the two girls there. He immediately fell in love with the two of them, but the sisters didn't know which of them he favored. A few days passed before Maria realized that she had fallen madly in love with the young man.

Unclear about the sultan's son's feelings, she despaired, climbed the falls and plunged down from the highest point. When Cristina found out about her sister's death, she too climbed the falls and followed Maria into death.

When the young man was looking for the sisters, he found the dead bodies of the girls. He recovered the bodies of the two and buried them under the cases. Then he gave the cases the names of the two girls he had loved and walked away without ever marrying.
