Iligan City

Iligan City is a first- income city in the Lanao del Norte Province of the Philippines and was its capital until 1982. It is located 800 km southwest of Manila on the island of Mindanao .

The city is nicknamed the City of Majestic Waterfalls , as there are more than 20 waterfalls in and around Iligan.

The most impressive are the María Cristina waterfalls , at the foot of which the largest hydroelectric power station in Mindanao is stationed, making the city the industrial center of the south. Furthermore, the Limunsudan waterfalls are to be mentioned, which are counted among the highest waterfalls in all of Asia.

Origin of name

The name Iligan comes from the word "iligan" or "ilijan" from the dialect Higaunon and means "defensive fortress ". From the earliest times there has been a fort in today's city, built against the constant attacks by pirates and other hostile ethnic groups of Mindanao.

geography

Iligan City is bounded to the north by the administrative municipality of Lugait in the Misamis Oriental province , to the south by the municipalities of Baloi and Linamon and to the east by the territory of the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon . To the west lies the coastal region on Iligan Bay , part of the Mindanao Sea .

The city has an area of 775.76 km². It has extensive port facilities with ferry connections and a container port. To the east is the flat coastal plain behind which rise volcanic hills and mountains that house the waterfalls and cold springs for which Iligan is well known. To the west of the city center the Agus flows into the sea. The Maria Cristina waterfalls lie on the course of the river. A number of hydropower plants were built on the Agus. In total there are 23 waterfalls , eight springs and 15 caves in the area of the city .

Demographics and language

The residents of Iligan City are mainly Christian (93.61%). They are a mixture of immigrants of Muslim origin and descendants of the Cebuano ethnic group. The minority are the Tagalog and other emigrants from different parts of the country.

history

Iligan began as a village called Bayug, about 2.5 km north of what is now the urban area. It was the earliest known settlement prior to the arrival of the Spanish occupiers in Mindanao, built by local sea-dwellers known as the Maragats. In the late half of the 16th century, these were subjugated by immigrants from the island kingdom of Panglao, which was on the island of Bohol .

According to the Jesuit historian Fr. Francisco Combes, the Moluccan king of Ternate invaded Panglao, which is why the inhabitants fled to Dapitan in large numbers . Here the surviving Prince of Panglao, Pagbuaya, received the expedition of the Spaniard Legazpi in 1565 . His son, Pedro Manuel Manook, converted to Christianity and made the village of Bayug the earliest Christian settlement in the country.

In the years that followed, the village survived countless attacks by various hostile groups, thanks to, it is said, faith in God and trust in its patron, the Archangel Michael . Later, the settlement moved from Bayug to what is now Iligan.

A stone fortress named Fort St. Francis Xavier was built here in 1642 to protect the place from bandits. However, the fort did not withstand the recurring floods.

For this reason, a new fortress was built elsewhere around 1850, this time at the mouth of the Tubod River. Then another fort was built called Fort Victoria or Cota de Iligan.

In 1899, the Spanish occupiers of Mindanao abandoned Iligan and cleared the way for American troops to land in 1900. After the end of Moro province in 1914, Iligan became an administrative municipality with 8 barrios side by side with the municipality of Mandulog.

After a peaceful period of 40 years without fighting, Iligan was captured by Japanese troops in 1942. The Japanese held the city until 1944 and then fled it. On November 15, 1944, the end of the Japanese atrocities was celebrated with a large Commonwealth Day parade.

On June 16, 1950, the area of the municipality of Iligan became a notarized city of Lanao del Norte . It was named a city of the first category in 1969 and on July 1, 1977 with Presidential Decree No. 465 even to a city of 1st class "A". When on July 4, 1959 the Republic Act No. 2228 divided the former province of Lanao into the provinces of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur , Iligan City was named the capital of Lanao del Norte. On June 24, 1982, the seat of the provincial administration was then moved to the administrative municipality of Tubod , which is still the seat of government of the province to this day.

The tropical cyclone Washi brought enormous amounts of rain on December 16, 2011, which led to flash floods. In Iligan City and also in the neighboring city of Cagayan de Oro , these claimed hundreds of lives because the residents were surprised in their sleep.

climate

Since the city is located outside the typhoon belt, the climate is consistently warm throughout the year, sometimes rainy, with temperatures of 22 to 33 ° C and an average monthly rainfall of 109 mm.
