Origin of name
Around 1834 there was a civil government in the area of today's Dipolog, then Tulwanan, with a "captain" as the local executive. Historians claim that at this time newly arriving missionaries inquired about the location. When they asked a local: "Donde esta el Capitan?", He only understood the word Capitan , pointed west and answered the newcomers in his dialect Subano Di-Pag , which means something like on the opposite side of the river . However, the missionaries believed they had been given the place name. That's what they called the place Dipag. Over the years and under the influence of the various dialects and pronunciations, the name finally changed to DIPOLOG.

history
Dipolog was first mentioned when the Spanish provincial government of Misamis set up a civil government in 1834 in the area on which the present urban area of Dipolog City extends. In 1896 the first parish was established with Father Esteban Yepes as chief administrator.
The place went up when around 1912 the US government raised the settlement to a "regular town" through General John J. Pershing , the then governor of Mindanao and Sulu , and on July 1, 1913 Dipolog to an official administrative municipality of the Zamboanga Province appointed.
In 1942, during the Second World War, Governor Felipe B. Azcuna briefly relocated the provincial seat of government from Zamboanga City to Dipolog. This effectively gave Dipolog city status.
With the coming into force of Republic Act No. 711 on June 5, 1952, the former province of Zamboanga was split into two independent provinces. Dipolog was named the capital of northwestern Zamboanga del Nortes .
Dipolog officially received the town charter on January 1, 1970, signed by the then President Ferdinand Marcos with the Rep. Act No. 5520.
