Liloy is a municipality in the Zamboanga del Norte province of the Philippines . It has 39,812 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census).

Origin of name

The first settlers saw swirling water , which is called Lilo in their dialect , at a place that is today near the Barangay (district) Lamao . This led to the entire place being named Lilo . In later generations, or possibly by the incoming Christian settlers, the letter y was added and led to the current place name.

geography

The community is located in the northwestern part of the Zamboanga peninsula . It is surrounded by the parish of Salug to the east, Tampilisan to the south and Labason to the west. In the north lies the coastline of the place with the access to the Sulu Sea .

The community has a total area of ​​159 km², about 78% of which is used for agriculture.

The next town, Dipolog City , is 132 km northeast and can be reached via a well-developed country road. In the southeast of the municipality is Zamboanga City , which is a total of 184 km away.

Language and religion

With a share of 92%, the Cebuano dialect is the most widespread in the municipality. This is followed by the languages ​​Subanon with a share of 6% and Tausūg with 1.04% of the population.

With 87.28%, the majority of the residents of the religious communities belong to the Roman Catholic faith. It is followed by Islam with 2%, Iglesia ni Cristo with 1.06% and Aglipay with 1%.

economy

The main sources of income for the village are fishing and agriculture. Mainly coconuts , rice , corn , peanuts , mongos and other root vegetables are grown .

The industrial areas can be found in the barangays Timan and Sta. Cruz. The community also has its own small port.

history

Liloy was originally a barrio in the Sindangan community . It was not until 1951 that the place split off from its mother parish and became an independent parish on August 22nd of this year with the effect of Executive Order No. 469, signed by President Elpidio Quirino .

In 1959, the municipality of Salug and then in 1978 the Barangay (district) Tampilisan split off from Liloy, with the result that the municipality lost a large part of its legal administrative territory.

The municipality of Liloy, like most other places in Zamboanga del Norte , belongs to climate type four. In this climate category, precipitation can occur all year round, with a more pronounced rainy phase during the months of June to the end of December. The months between January and May, on the other hand, are much drier. The average temperatures are between 26.3 ° C and 29.5 ° C, with a humidity of 72 to 88%.

Since the municipality is outside the typhoon belt that grazes the Philippines in its northern regions, Liloy is largely spared from tropical storms.
