history

Initially, large parts of the northern peninsula belonged to the Misamis province, including the Dapitan district with the associated district Dipolog. Around 1913 Dapitan was assigned to the Zamboanga Province with the capital Zamboanga City . In 1942, Governor Felipe B. Azcuna briefly relocated the seat of government from Zamboanga City to Dipolog . This effectively gave Dipolog city status.

With the entry into force of Republic Act No. 711 on June 5, 1952 , Zamboanga was finally split into two independent provinces: the province of Zamboanga del Sur with Pagadian and Zamboanga del Norte with Dipolog City as the respective capital.

It is also worth mentioning that Dr. José Rizal , the greatest Filipino folk hero , lived in exile in Dapitan / Zamboanga del Norte from July 17, 1892 to July 31, 1896.

economy

About half of the country is arable land . Maize , coconut and rice are preferred . But cassava , bananas and mango are also common crops. The region is rich in treasures from the sea and mineral resources such as gold, silver, manganese and copper. Although the Sulu Sea offers a wide range of different types of fish, fish production is mainly driven in the north of the province by fish farming of shrimps and other crustaceans in large ponds. However, commercial fishing has increased steadily in recent years, with the main fish caught, besides sardines and herrings and other fish species in the South Pacific, being tuna.

climate

The climate in the region is mild and pleasant, interrupted by periods of steady rainfall, especially in the months of May to November. In the southern area, on the other hand, there are longer periods of drought.
