The Aliguay Island Protected Landscape / Seascape is located in the province of Zamboanga del Norte , in the Sulu Sea , in the Philippines . It was established by Presidential Decree No. 106 on May 6, 1999 on and around the island of Aliguay. The island belongs to the administrative area of the city of Dapitan City . The Aliguay Island Protected Landscape / Seascape is a combined nature reserve and marine reserve . It covers an area of 1,187.51 hectares and a surrounding buffer zone of 1,191.89 hectares . The island can be reached via ferry connections from Dapitan City. The crossing takes about one to two hours, depending on weather conditions.
Aliguay Island is about 20 km northwest of Dapitan City and is overgrown by dense vegetation. The island is surrounded by a number of coral reefs , the largest of which is Challenger Reef, to the southeast. The island had 695 inhabitants (2007 census).
