ecology
The archipelago is one of the ten most important breeding areas for the green turtle ( Chelonia mydas ) and one of the few breeding areas for the hawksbill sea turtle ( Eretmochelys imbricata ) worldwide. On the islands of Baguan and is the main nesting site for green turtles. Overall, the number of nesting clutches found on green turtles in 2011 was 14,220, with over 1.44 million eggs. In 2004, the lowest number of nest sites was found so far, a little over 4,000. This significant increase in the number of nesting clutches is seen as a success of the conservation efforts of the Philippines and Malaysia . The hawksbill sea turtle nests on Pulau Gulisaan and can be seen all year round.
The archipelago is an important wintering area and resting place for migratory birds from Asia. The islands are surrounded by large coral reefs and are particularly rich in species. Large, extensive seagrass meadows lie in the lagoon areas of the islands. These include the species Halophila ovalis , Cymodocea rotundata , Halodule pinifolia , Halodule uninervis and Syringodium isoetifolium , these are considered pioneer plants.
The flora of the islands comprising the tree and plant species Terminalia catappa , umbellatum Desmodium , Pandanus tectorius , Premna serratifolia , Premna obtusifolia , Erythrina variegata , Barringtonia asiatica , Thespesia populnea , Hibiscus tiliaceus , Sterculia Ceramica , Callphyllum inophyllum , Guettarda speciosa , Xylocarpus moluccensis , Pongamia pinnata and Scaevola frutescens .
