Zamboanga Sibugay is a province in the southeast of the Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX) on the Philippine island of Mindanao . The capital of the province is Ipil .

geography

The province is bounded in the north by the province of Zamboanga del Norte , in the east by Zamboanga del Sur and in the southwest by the extended urban area of Zamboanga City . In the south, the stretch of coast extends over the Bay of Sibuguey , a section of the Gulf of Moro .

Zamboanga Sibugay has a land area of ​​3,607.8 km², which corresponds to a total of 43.09% of the original area of ​​the province of Zamboanga del Sur , to which it once belonged.

Demographics and language

The languages Cebuano and Ilonggo are spoken by the majority . Tagalog and Ilokano and other ethnic colloquial languages are just as common .

economy

The leading industries are bakeries, rice and corn mills, rattan and wooden furniture production, as well as the production of concrete, clothing, wax and candles.

In addition to rice , maize and coconut , the main crops are also rubber , fruits, various local vegetables, tobacco , coffee , cocoa and tubers. Mindanao State University is a major educational institution .

Zamboanga Sibugay is divided into 16 independently administered municipalities and two constituencies ( Congressional Districts ). These are in turn divided into 389 Barangays (districts).

The climatic conditions in the province are moderate ( climate type III), without typical dry or rainy seasons. The amount of precipitation varies from 1,599 mm to 3,500 mm. The temperature is relatively warm and constant at 22 to 35 ° C.

The area of ​​Zamboanga Sibugay is located outside the typical typhoon zone that grazes the Philippines, which means that it is largely spared from tropical storms.

history

The area of ​​Zamboanga Sibugay was originally part of the province of Zamboanga del Sur . There were already approaches to a split well before 1960. Various motions were submitted to Congress, but remained unprocessed.

However, a referendum held in May 1997 made clear the will of the population to establish a separate province. With Republic Act No. 8973, the spin-off was finally implemented on February 22, 2001.
