Northern Mindanao ( Tagalog : Hilagang Mindanao ) or Region X is a region of the Philippines .

It includes five provinces:

The administrative center is Cagayan de Oro .

The province of Lanao del Norte previously belonged to Region XII ( SOCCSKSARGEN ), but was assigned to Northern Mindanao by Executive Order No. 36.

geography

Northern Mindanao is bounded to the east by Caraga , to the west by the Zamboanga Peninsula and to the south by the Davao region , SOCCSKSARGEN and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao . To the north is the region's coastline along the Mindanao Sea .

In the inland, the landscape offers wide plains, isolated mountain ranges, rough hilly landscapes and extensive plateaus.

The district has a total area of 20,496 km². 6,571 km² of this is unpopulated or fallow land. 13,925 km², or 67.9% of the district area, is forest area.

Demographics and language

4,689,302 people live in the entire district (as of 2015). The population density in 2010 was 160.4 people per km².

The majority of the population immigrated from the neighboring islands of Cebu and Panay in earlier times . There are also descendants of the Waray-waray, Tagalog and Marano ethnic groups.

The most commonly spoken dialect is Cebuano , but Maranao and Manobo are also represented. The languages Tagalog and English are taught in schools and are therefore also understood in the region.

economy

Since most of the region is covered by forest, wood processing and wood export are an important economic factor. Another is the fishing and the distribution of other marine products from the nearby Mindanao Sea . The region is also the third largest producer of corn and bananas .

While industrialization is an important component of future development, the region's primary immediate objective is the cultivation of fruits, rice and various types of vegetables. Mindanao State University is a major educational institution .

climate

Occasional thunderstorm rains fall throughout the region's provinces throughout the year. The lush tropical vegetation, its many natural springs and the high altitude of the interior make the climate pleasantly mild.

Since the region lies outside the typhoon belt that grazes the northern parts of the Philippines, stormy winds are very rare here.
