The Mount Kalatungan Range Natural Park is a nature reserve and is located south of the Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park in the province of Bukidnon on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines . It was established by Presidential Decree No. 305 on May 5, 2000.

The nature reserve is divided into a 22,076 hectare core zone and a 13,687 hectare buffer zone, which completely encloses the core zone. It overlaps with the areas of the Manupali Watershed Forest Reserve and the Muleta Watershed Forest Reserve , so that a biosphere corridor covering an area of ​​127,731 hectares covers the areas of the Kitanglad and Kalatungan Mountains.

The height band of the nature reserve extends from 1,064 to 2,824 meters, the summit of Kalatungan . The forests in the mountains of Kalatungan also contain evergreen rainforest, which from a height of about 1000 meters changes into a lower growing mountain rainforest, which extends to the summit regions. The forest cover an area of ​​approximately 14,911 ha, bushland or heathland covers an area of ​​approximately 2,130 ha, and grassland covers an area of ​​3,295 ha. The park has a variety of surface shapes that create a habitat for a variety of animals and plants So there are numerous waterfalls, wetlands, a lake, caves, cliffs, and other rock formations.

Hydrology

The source areas of many smaller rivers and streams are located in the nature reserve, the largest of which is the Muleta on the southern flank. The headwaters of the Cagayan River lie on the northern flank of the mountain range . The main source of the river is at about 2,500 meters above sea level on the Kalatungan.

There are smaller populations of the Gold Crown flying fox , the short-faced flying fox (Alionycteris paucidentata) which in the area of Kalatungan Mountain Range and Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park are endemic. The Filipino pustular pig ( Sus philippinensis ) and the Filipino deer ( Cervus mariannus ) also live in the park.

Five dominant tree species that are endemic to Mindanao grow in the park, the Katmon ( Dillenia philippinensis ), White Lauan ( Shorea contorta ), Red Lauan ( Shorea negrosensis ), Bagtikan ( Parashorea malaanonan ) and the Bikal Baboi ( Schizotachyum dielsianum ).

Culture

The indigenous people of Bukidnons, made up of the indigenous tribes of the Manobo and Talaandig, live mostly in the forest areas that they consider sacred as these areas are used as burial sites. The locals live from the forest, which they use as a source of food, but also for natural medicine. Before entering the mountains, mountaineers and hikers must obtain permission from the tribe elders and perform a ritual in order to favor the spirits of the ancestors.

A small hydroelectric power station on the southern flank of the mountain range in Maramag supplies the province with electricity.
