The Philippine pustular pig ( Sus philippensis ) is a species of mammal from the family of real pigs (Suidae) endemic to the Philippines .
Filipino pustular pigs are relatively small pigs. Their fur is colored dark brown or black. Males have a mane of the nape of the neck that can extend down to the back. Like all pustular pigs , they have three pairs of wart-shaped swellings on their faces.
These animals live in the Philippines, they are known from the islands of Luzon , Mindanao , the eastern Visayas islands and smaller offshore islands. The exact distribution area is difficult to determine, since two other species also living in the Philippines, the Visayas pustular pig and the Mindoro pustular pig , were recently raised to the species category. They used to be found in almost all habitats, today they have been pushed back into remote forest regions.
Little is known about the way of life. Presumably, they live in family groups and are omnivores that feed on fruits, roots, insects, small vertebrates, and carrion.
Filipino pustular pigs are an endangered species. The reasons for this lie in the progressive destruction of their habitat, in hunting and in hybridization with wild boars . The IUCN lists them as endangered ( vulnerable ).
