Alfred Nehring (1845–1904)

Alfred Nehring (born January 29, 1845 in Gandersheim , † September 29, 1904 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a German professor and from 1881 head of zoology at the Agricultural University in Berlin as well as a zoologist and paleontologist .

Life

At the “Herzogl. Gymnasium in Wolfenbüttel "he was according to his handwritten curriculum vitae" since October 1st. 1871 initially as a regular teacher, then (since January 1, 1874) as senior teacher ”. In mid-March 1881, as a “teacher of zoology at the agricultural college” in Berlin, the Minister of Agriculture awarded him “the title of professor”.

He researched mummified, domesticated guinea pigs from the dead fields of Ancón / Peru and collected important data, which he compared with those of the wild guinea pigs researched by the Swiss zoologist Johann Jakob von Tschudi (1818–1889) . He demonstrated domestication-related differences and in this way scientifically established the ancestry of the guinea pigs kept by the Inca from a subspecies of wild guinea pigs. In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
