The Cagayan ( eng .: Cagayan River ), also known as the Cagayan de Oro River or the Batang River, is a river that flows in the province of Bukidnon and Miamis Oriental in the Philippines . Its source rises in the centrally located Kalatungan Mountains at an altitude of approx. 2,500 meters on Mount Kalatungan on the island of Mindanao . The river flows into the Mindanao Sea in the city of Cagayan de Oro . The Cagayan has a length of 90 km and a water catchment area of 1,521 km², which includes the municipalities of Talakag , Baungon and smaller parts of the province of Lanao del Sur . Its main tributaries are the Kulawaig, Tumalaong and Bubunawan.
The upper reaches of the Cagayan flow in a canyon-like valley that separates the Kalatungan and Kitanglad mountains . After the confluence with its main tributaries, on the border with the Misamis Oriental province , the course of the river continues. On its tributary Bubunawan are the approx. 100 meter high waterfalls of the Bubunawan Falls, where a hydroelectric power plant of the same name (output: 7 megawatts) is operated.
