The Gulf of Moro is formed from the bays and headlands of the Philippine island of Mindanao . It is part of the Celebes Sea and is surrounded by the Zamboanga Peninsula and the central part of Mindanao Island.
The Bay of Sibuguey and the Bay of Illana are bays of this gulf . Other smaller bays are the Bay of Dumanquilas and Port Sibulan in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay , the Bay of Pagadinan in Zamboanga del Sur and the Bay of Linao in the Province of Maguindanao . The Gulf of Moro is connected to the Sulu Sea via the Strait of Basilan .
The most important and largest city on its coast is Zamboanga City , located on its western bank. Another notable port city is Cotabato City , which is located on its eastern coast.
On August 16, 1976, a quake measuring 7.9 caused on the Richter scale, a tsunami wave that broke in the Morogolf and killed more than 5,000 people on its coasts.
