The Rio Grande de Mindanao , also known as the Mindanao River or the Pulangi River on its upper reaches , is the second largest river on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao after the Agusan .

geography

The main source is in the 2,093 meter high Tago mountain range , north of Malaybalay City , southwest of Butuan City in the Bukidnon plateau . Here it is known as the Pulangi River and flows south into the province of Cotabato . Its most important tributaries are the Buluan , the Allah - both flow through the 2,880 km² Ligawasan wetland - and the Muleta, which rises in the Kalatungan Mountains . The water catchment area of the river extends from the mountain range of Mount Kimangkil in Bukidnon in the north over Mount Apo to the Daguma Mountains in the south and covers a total of 23,169 km². There are numerous lakes in its catchment area , including the 65 km² Buluan Lake , Sebu Lake and Maughan Lake , the latter being the largest and highest volcanic crater lake on Mindanao.

After passing Quezon , the river leaves the mountainous regions and flows through the broad and fertile Central Mindanao Basin, which extends in the south-central part of the island. In the vicinity of the Municipality of Kabacan it unites with the Kabacan River, it is only now called Mindanao River and flows northeast towards Cotabato City .

Before it finally flows into the Bay of Illana , part of the Gulf of Moro at Cotabato City , it divides into two parallel arms, the Cotabato River and the Tamentaka River. Both are divided by a 180 m high hill.

On its way it flows through the provinces of Bukidnon , Cotabato , Maguindanao and Shariff Kabunsuan . Larger settlements such as Cotabato City , Malaybalay City and Datu Piang lie along its course .

In total, it has a length of about 320 km and a width of up to 96 m.

economy

During the rainy periods, floods often occur along its course of the river, which makes the land on its banks fertile and productive. Agriculture in general and rice cultivation in particular are beneficially influenced by it.

It is also an important factor in fish farming and fishing. Not to be forgotten is its function as a waterway. The river is one of the most important transportation routes for goods to and from Cotabato City.

Recently, it has also become more and more interesting for tourism. With boat tours, water sports and boat races, the river should contribute to the attractiveness of the centrally located provinces of Mindanao .

Additional Information

The Ligawasan river marshes are home to the now rare Philippines crocodile .

It is culturally important, as the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival of Cotabato City and the Festival of Hariraya Puasa of Penafrancia are held on the river .
