The Maughan Lake ( English Lake Maughan ) is a volcanic crater lake and is located on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines . It is also known to the locals as Lake Holon , which means deep water in the T'Boli language. The lake is located about 30 km southwest of the city of General Santos City in the Daguma Mountains , in the province of South Cotabato in the area of the municipality of T'Boli . Lake Maughan was created after the eruption of the Mount Parker volcano in January 1641. The lake has an approximately circular floor plan and covers an area of approx. 3.04 km² at a height of 1,356 meters above sea level, making it the highest inland lake on the Mindanao Island. In the northwest, the lake has an outflow into the Gao River and is thus in the water catchment area of the Rio Grande de Mindanao . In the northeast of the lake there are several hydrothermal springs with a temperature between 40 and 55 ° C, otherwise the lake only receives its water supply through precipitation.

The lake has a great danger potential for the surrounding areas. It lies deep in the summit caldera of Mount Parker, the crater walls are very unstable and reach heights of 200 to 500 meters above the lake. They have an incline between 20 and 50 degrees and are mainly made of tuff . On September 26, 1995, around 30 million cubic meters of water erupted from the lake and a 6-meter-high tidal wave was created, probably as a result of a landslide in the caldera , which killed around 100 people on the north-western slope of the volcano and caused 212 million Philippine damage Pesos in the surrounding areas. On January 6, 2012, the Sun Star reported a sharp rise in the water level in Lake Maughan, which put local authorities on high alert.
