General Santos City (Dadiangas) (often called GenSan for short , the previous name was Dadiangas ) is the southernmost city in the Philippines , on the south coast of Mindanao Island . General Santos is a major seaport at the end of Sarangani Bay in the Celebes Sea . The city also has access to the fertile Corona Valley, where there are numerous farms and the Buayan River flows.
The name of the city goes back to General Paulino Santos. In 1939 he led a group of 62 Christian settlers who settled there in order to colonize the area, which is considered fertile, and to make it usable for agriculture. Previously, the area was only inhabited by the B'laan people, who moved around nomadically and called the place Dadiangas. In June 1956 the name "General Santos" was introduced for the first time. This was then retained when General Santos was granted city status on July 8, 1968 .
Today the agricultural industry and fishing are two of the most important economic sectors in the city. Pineapples , corn , tuna and coconuts , among other things , are produced and processed there. Cattle breeding also plays a major role in this region.
Thanks to major economic aid from Japan , the USA and the World Bank , General Santos's infrastructure could be greatly improved in the 1990s: The construction of a new airport, the construction of new docks and piers began in 1994. Mindanao is an important educational institution in the city State University .
Barangays
General Santos City is politically divided into 26 barangays .
