At 2954 meters, Mount Apo is the highest mountain in the Philippines and is located in the province of Cotabato on the island of Mindanao . A few kilometers to the northeast is the city of Davao City . The Apo is a stratovolcano and has a total of three peaks. The time of its last outbreak is unknown.
The mountain was first climbed on October 10, 1880, by a group led by Joaquin Rajal . Mount Apo is a popular hiking destination because its summit can be reached without climbing techniques. You should plan around three days for the ascent and descent on the main route from the west via Kidapawan. It is possible to hire a local guide. The path leads through woodland for a long time and is partly slippery and wet. The route from the southwest via the village of New Israel is shorter. There are two more infrequent ascent routes, from the south and from the east.
On May 9, 1936, the area around the volcano by Manuel Quezon was declared Mount Apo Natural Park . The national park is home to over 270 species of birds, over 100 of which are endemic .
The people of the Bagobas who live here are considered to be the Holy Mountain . The sulfur fumes of the solfataras were for them an embodiment of the god Mandarangan . In older ethnological reports even human sacrifices for the mountain are mentioned.
