The Agusan is a river that flows through almost the entire east of the Philippine island of Mindanao from south to north.

geography

It rises in the mountains of the Davao del Norte province , flows through the entire Agusan del Sur province , before flowing into the Butuan Bay , part of the Mindanao Sea, near Butuan City on the north coast of the Agusan del Norte province .

The Agusan is about 390 km long and thus, in front of the Rio Grande de Mindanao , the largest river in Mindanao and one of the largest rivers in the entire country. However, it is only passable for 260 km.

The river forms a fertile valley with a width of 65 to 80 km between the central highlands of Mindanao (in the west) and the Diwata Mountains in the east. Its main nature reserve is the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary .

history

The excavations in the archaeological excavation site of Butuan City showed that the region on the lower reaches of the Agusan was an important gold supplier for the Southeast Asia region from the early Middle Ages . A trade center could be documented that had trade relations as far as Persia .

When the Spanish colonists came to Mindanao , the Agusan River was the best way to get into the Caraga hinterland . The Spanish missionaries used the waterway on rafts and canoes to get to the settlements along the shore.

At the time of the Philippine-American War, Filipino revolutionaries sank large boulders in the passage near the islands of Pungtod to prevent American invaders from reaching the city of Butuan by river.

Culture

A boat trip on the river along the Barangays reveals a lot of the history, culture, handicrafts and people of Butuan. In honor of the patroness of Agusan, Saint Anne , the Abayan Festival is celebrated on the last Saturday in July . Flower processions are held on the river and races with barotos (small row boats) are carried out.
