Baguio City ( Ilokano : Ciudad ti Baguio ; Filipino : Lungsod ng Baguio ) is a city in the north of the Philippine main island of Luzón . It is located 1500 m above sea level in the Philippine Cordilleras and was the capital of the Philippines between 1910 and 1975 in the summer months due to the associated cooler temperatures . In the winter months, Manila was the capital.
Numerous high-ranking politicians in the country as well as prominent business people maintain luxurious residences in Baguio.
The city temporarily gained international fame through the 1978 World Chess Championship between the then reigning world champion Anatoli Karpov from the former USSR and his former compatriot, the grandmaster who had fled the Soviet Union and at that time still stateless Viktor Korchnoi .
