history
The first settlements in this place are said to have existed before the early Ming Dynasty . During archaeological excavations, porcelain, pearls and other objects have been found which indicate that there was a brisk trade with China and the Middle East in earlier times .
In 1850 Pindangan was renamed San Fernando and at the same time became the new capital of the La Union province . As in other parts of the region, there were uprisings against the Spaniards at the end of the 19th century.
From 1898 San Fernando belonged to the United States , as the Spanish had to cede the Philippines after the Spanish-American War . The Japanese bombed the city on December 8, 1941, and they occupied it for three years. On September 22, 1944, US planes flew over the city for the first time, which was then liberated by the Japanese occupiers the following year. San Fernando was named a city in 1998.
San Fernando is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of San Fernando de La Union , which was founded on January 19, 1970 by Pope Paul VI. and includes the province of La Union.
