Sarangani is an island in the Davao Occidental Province of the Philippines . It is located about 12 km off the south coast of Mindanao Island and 3 km northwest of Balut Island , in a sea area in the north of the Celebes Sea . The island has an area of approximately 36.18 km² and is administered by the municipality of Sarangani . In the 2007 census, 16,183 inhabitants were registered in the nine barangays on the island .

The island has an elongated oval shape. The coastline has a length of about 37 km. The eastern coastline is characterized by high cliffs, while the western coastline is characterized by flat beaches and deeply cut bays. The largest bays are Patirang Bay, Tumanao Bay and Patuko Gulf. The island is around 12 km long and 5.1 km wide and has numerous coral reefs and sea grass meadows in front of it. The topography of the island is hilly with elevations from 80 to 120 meters above sea level. The island is largely used for agriculture, about 67% of the island's area.

There is a ferry connection to the island from the port in Glan and General Santos City . The two islands of Balut and Sarangani were also known under the names Sanguil, Sangil, Sanguir or Sanguiz during the Spanish colonial times, which led to some confusion about the starting point of the great volcanic eruption of 1641 , which was ultimately, after scientific research, attributed to the Parker volcano .
