The Balut is a volcano that has created its own island (also known as Sanguil), off the southernmost cape of the Philippine island of Mindanao , Cape Sarangani. On the west and southwest flanks of the volcano there are some areas with hot water springs. There is no scientifically proven information about outbreaks. The island has a coastline of 57 km and a land area of approx. 80 km². On Balut there are the Sabung Hot Springs, which reach a water temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. The neighboring island of Balut is Sarangani , it is located ten kilometers northeast of the Balut and three kilometers from the coast. Between the two islands is Marorong Islet, a small island with a small fort from the pre-colonial era.

The island belongs to the municipality of Sarangani in the province of Davao Occidental . On the island are the Barangay Gotamco and Lipol, which according to the 2007 census had 2698 inhabitants. The two islands of Balut and Sarangani were also known under the names Sanguil, Sangil, Sanguir or Sanguiz during the Spanish colonial times, which led to some confusion about the starting point of the great volcanic eruption of 1641 , which was ultimately, after scientific research, attributed to the Parker volcano .
