The striped uhu ( Bubo philippensis ), also called Philippinenuhu , is a species from the family of the real owl. It occurs exclusively in Southeast Asia. It is a relatively rare species that is classified as endangered.
features
With a height of 40 to 43 centimeters, the striped owl is a relatively small species of owl. He has short, slightly outwardly inclined spring ears. The upper side of the body is reddish brown to dark brown with black longitudinal stripes. The tail is dull red-brown with a dark horizontal stripe. The chin is pale reddish, the throat whitish. The rest of the underside of the body is pale reddish brown with dark brown streaks. The barrels are feathered. The beak is relatively large. In its area of distribution, the striped owl can only be confused with the Mindanao scops owl . However, this is more red in color and there are very broad stripes on the chest and flanks.
distribution and habitat
The distribution area is limited to the Philippines. The striped uhu occurs here on the islands of Luzon , Catanduanes , Mindanao , Samar and Leyte . It is a standing bird. Its habitat are forests near rivers and lakes. He usually only stays in the lowlands.
Way of life
The striped owl is a largely unexplored species. Neither its way of life nor its reproductive biology have been researched to date. Nothing is known about its diet either. Legs and feet as well as the very powerful beak suggest that it mainly eats small mammals and birds.
Existence and endangerment
The population of the striped hull is estimated at around 2,500–10,000 adult animals. The endangerment of the eagle owl is caused by the increasing fragmentation of the habitat through illegal logging and the widespread slash and burn. In the Sierra Madre, for example, the forest stock has declined by 83% and in Mindanao by 29%, so that the stocks are increasingly being pushed back to the protected areas.
