The Laguna de Bay is the largest lake of the Philippines and the third largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia after the Tonle Sap in Cambodia and the Lake Toba on the island of Sumatra , Indonesia . It is located on the island of Luzon between the provinces of Laguna in the south and Rizal in the north.
The Metro Manila is located in the northwest along the coast. The area of the lake is 949 km², it has an average depth of only 2 m, the maximum depth is 20 m. The lake is shaped like a W , with two peninsulas protruding from the north coast.
The Laguna de Bay flows over the Pasig into the Manila Bay . The lake is littered with fishing nets from local fishermen who fish there regularly.
By far the largest of the lake's nine islands is Talim Island , which is part of the towns of Binangonan and Cardona in the Rizal province.
Laguna de Bay is a Spanish expression, so called because of the city (bay) in the province of Laguna. According to the Vocabulario de Lengua Tagala of 1613 printed in Pila , the name was Pulilan before the Spanish colonization .
