International Year of Languages

The year 2008 was declared the International Year of Languages by the United Nations on May 16, 2007 by resolution. The year aims to promote multilingualism, linguistic diversity and thus cultural diversity and respect for other languages.

The UNESCO was entrusted with the patronage of the language year and announced an International Day of Mother Language on 21 February, 2008.
