The Hamiguitan is a mountain on the island of Mindanao ( Philippines ). It is located in the Davao Oriental province in the easternmost coastal mountains on the Pacific Ocean , one of the most remote regions in the Philippines, and reaches an altitude of 1620 meters. The area of ​​the mountain range in which the Hamiguitan is located is shared by the provincial capital Mati City and the communities of San Isidro and Governor Generoso .

Hydrology

The mountains around the Hamiguitan form the watershed between the Gulf of Davao and the Philippine Sea . The largest rivers that arise in the mountains are the Bitaogan River , the Maua River , the Dumagooc and the Tibanban River . The Dumagooc River has a water runoff of up to 30 m³ per second, but smaller streams dry up in summer.

Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary

In July 2004 the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary was declared. Based on the Republic Act. In 9303 an area of ​​6,834 hectares was designated as a nature reserve.

Five vegetation zones are described in this area . A managed agro-ecosystem is located 75-420 m above sea level, wing fruit plants cover the vegetation zone from 420 to 920 m, low mountain flora occupies an altitude band from 920 to 1160 m, a typical moss landscape is from 1160 to 1350 m and the unique pygmy forest covers an altitude band from 1160 to 1200 m. Many of these mountain plants on the Hamiguitan are endemic or rare. The dwarf tree forest covers an area of ​​225 hectares and is formed by two dominant and at the same time endemic tree species, Leptospermum flavescens and Wendlandia nervosa . The dwarf trees reach a height of 1.4 meters and a trunk diameter of 8 cm.

The Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is an important sanctuary for the Philippine eagle and other endangered bird and mammal species, such as the golden crowned flying fox ( Acerodon jubatus ), the Philippine tarsier ( Tarsius syrichta ), the Philippine pustular pig ( Sus philippinensis ) for short-nosed bats ( Haplonycteris fischeri ), the Fleckenmusang ( Paradoxurus hermaphroditus ) and the Hamiguitan hairtail rat from the genus of the Philippines hairtail rat ( Batomys hamiguitan ), of which only the Hamiguitan Mountains are known as a distribution area, which was first described in 2008 .

Of the 53 different bird species, ten are endemic to Mindanao, twenty are endemic to the Philippines and many are classified as endangered. These include the Bartlett's dagger-sting dove ( Gallicolumba criniger ), dark-eared dove ( Phapitreron cinereiceps ), the tarrician hornbill ( Pinelopides panini ) and the gray-throated nectar bird ( Aethopyga primigenia )

Since 2014, the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage .
