The Aliwagwag Protected Landscape was set up on April 5, 2011 under Presidential Declaration 139 . It is located in the provinces of Davao Oriental and Davao de Oro in the southeast of Mindanao Island in the Philippines , in the municipality of Boston , Cateel and Compostela .
The nature reserve comprises a core zone of 10,491 hectares and a buffer zone of 420 hectares around the Aliwagwag waterfalls. These extend over several cascades that have a total drop of over 300 meters over 84 steps, between one and ten meters. The Aliwagwag waterfalls are one of the special tourist destinations in the province. The nature reserve is located in a region that is covered with dense tropical vegetation.
The area lies south of the Pacific typhoon belt and has no special division into dry and rainy seasons.
