The Bartlett's dagger-sting pigeon ( Gallicolumba crinigera ) or sometimes also fire pigeon is a species from the order of the pigeon birds. It occurs in three subspecies only on a few Southeast Asian islands. The IUCN classifies the species as endangered ( vulnerable ). The population is estimated at 1,000 to 2,500 individuals.

Appearance

The Bartlett dagger-sting pigeon reaches a body length of 27 centimeters and is thus slightly larger than the Luzon dagger-sting dove .

The Bartlett dagger-sting dove is very similar to the Luzon dagger-sting dove. However, she has a dark gray forehead. The back of the head and neck, the sides of the chest, the coat and the back are red-brown and have a purple to greenish sheen. The front neck is white. The striking red breast spot is very large, the breast and belly plumage below it are yellow-brown. The beak is dark. The iris is brown. The feet are reddish.

distribution and habitat

The Bartlett dagger-stinging pigeon is an endemic species of the southern Philippines and occurs or occurred there on the islands of Basilan , Bohol , Dinagat , Leyte , Mindanao and Samar . It probably originally appeared on Siargao as well. Investigations into the population of the species have only been able to prove individuals on Bohol and Mindanao in recent years. Basically, the Bartlett dagger-stinging pigeon is not a very common species. It is endangered by clearing and felling as well as by being caught.

The habitat of the Bartlett dagger-stinged pigeon are dry lowland forests. It occurs in both primary and secondary forests. Their height distribution ranges from 150 to 750 meters.

behavior

The Bartlett dagger-sting pigeon is a purely ground-dwelling species. It is very shy and at the same time very attentive, so that it is difficult to observe in the wild. Frightened Bartlett dagger-pigeons do not usually fly up, but constantly seek cover.

The clutch consists of only one egg. The incubation period is 15 to 17 days. The young bird is looked after by both parent birds. He fledged after about twenty days. Freshly hatched young birds are initially covered with light yellow dunes. By the time the young birds leave the nest, the wings are so well developed that they still cover the tail, which is still short and not fully developed. The red patch on the chest forms in the sixth week of life of the young birds.

Keeping in human care

The Bartlett dagger-stinging pigeon was first shown at London Zoo in 1863. The Frankfurt Zoo is one of the successful keepers and breeders of this type . He received the first Bartlett dagger-pigeons in 1969. Due to the threat to the population, a number of zoological gardens now maintain this species.

Existence and endangerment

The population of the Bartlett dagger-sting pigeon is estimated at around 1,000 to 2,500 adults . The main threat comes from the large-scale deforestation of the islands through legal and illegal logging and slash-and-burn, so that the occurrence of the species originally identified in 35 locations is now in the Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape on Bohol, Mount Hamiguitan and Mount Hilong -hilong is restricted to Mindanao. It is likely that stocks in Mount Malindang National Park and Mount Matutum have also been preserved.
