The dagger-sting pigeons ( Gallicolumba ) are a genus of pigeons that used to be counted among the Indo-Pacific earth pigeons (now known as the genus Alopecoenas ).

features

The species of dagger-stinging pigeon that live in the Philippines have a blood-red stain on their chests reminiscent of a bleeding wound caused by a dagger.

distribution

Five of the seven species are native to the Philippines. The golden breast pigeon lives in New Guinea and the hop pigeon on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi .

Way of life

The diet of these pigeons consists of fruits and seeds.

Systematics

In 2011, according to molecular biological studies by Jønsson et al. proposed to divide the relatively species-rich genus Gallicolumba into the genera Alopecoenas (Indo-Pacific earth pigeons) and Gallicolumba in the narrower sense (dagger- pigeons) . The results were used in a further study in 2013 by Moyle et al. basically confirmed with extensive material.

species

Since 2013, the following species have been included in the genus Gallicolumba in the narrower sense (dagger-pigeons):
