The Indo-Pacific earth pigeons ( Pampusana , Syn .: Alopecoenas ) are a genus of ground-dwelling pigeons that are native to the rainforests of Indonesia and the Pacific region . For a long time, the species of this genus were included in the genus of the dagger-stinging pigeon , but based on genetic studies they are now placed in an independent genus.
Distribution and characteristics
Typical of the Indo-Pacific earth pigeons is a plumage with a pale chest without further color markings and a darker belly. Many species also show pronounced sexual dimorphism . The diet of these pigeons consists of fruits and seeds.
Systematics
There are currently 20 species. Of the species-rich genera of pigeons , Pampusana has been hit hardest by extinction . Three to four species disappeared during the 18th century , and the remaining species have seen strong populations due to habitat destruction, introduced species, or overhunting. In addition, there are several species that have never been studied alive and are known only from subfossil bone fragments. These died out during the earlier human settlement in the South Pacific region (approx. 3000 BC to approx. 1400 AD)
Pampusana bones are distinctive so that this genus can be clearly recognized. However, the evolutionary affiliation of extinct species is often uncertain. For example, most of the extinct Polynesian taxa exist in a region where the white-headed lineage ( P. jobiensis , P. erythroptera ) meets the Melanesian lineage ( P. sanctaecrucis , P. stairi ).
species
The following species and subspecies are known so far:
- Huahine Earth Dove ( Pampusana sp.) (Subfossil)

- Manus gray-breasted pigeon (
- The subspecies Pampusana jobiensis chalconotus from Guadalcanal , Makira and Vella Lavella is extinct.
