Smøla is a place on the island of the same name Smøla in central Norway and at the same time a municipality in the Fylke Møre og Romsdal . In the municipality located at the northernmost tip of the district, 2150 people (as of February 27, 2020) live on an area of around 272 km². The largest island is Veiholmen . The municipality, which consists of several islands and villages, is named after the island.
The island of Smøla is located in the archipelago on the west coast of Norway . It is surrounded by countless smaller islands and can be reached by ferry. The hilly heathland on the island is characterized by lakes and small fjords . The vegetation consists of lichen, moss, grass and bushes. Due to its location on the Gulf Stream , the Atlantic and the surrounding archipelago are very rich in fish, almost all known fish species in Norway occur around Smøla. For this reason, the fishing industry and sport angling is an essential industry. There are two wind farms .

According to research results of the Institute for Geodesy and Geographic Information Technology at the TU Berlin , this is supposed to be the mythical island of Thule from Ptolemy's ancient map of the world .
One of the best-preserved rune stones in Norway, the coolestones preserved in a replica , was found on the neighboring island .
