history
The municipality was founded as part of the state- wide municipal reform on January 1, 2020 and consists of the former municipalities of Norddal and Stordal. The name of the municipality is not historically anchored. The Norwegian Language Council criticized the naming of the municipality because it is not a place name, but rather a general geographical term.
In Stordal there is the Stordal gamle kirke , a wooden church from 1789. The church of Norddal was built in 1782 in the Baroque style, the church of Sylte dates from 1863.
In 1934 a stone slide occurred in Tafjord, which is one of the worst natural disasters in Norway. The stone slide triggered several tidal waves that resulted in the deaths of 40 people.
economy
Agriculture is more important to the municipality's economy . Cattle, sheep and goat breeding as well as fruit and berry growing are particularly widespread. In the industrial sector, furniture production and the food sector are the most important employers. Another important source of income is tourism.
coat of arms
The coat of arms is supposed to represent a picture of the fjord community itself, with the different parts of the fjord landscape with water and sky in between. It was designed by Dag Øistein Endsjø .
