Utlandshörn wetland

The Utlandshörn wetland is a protected, extensive natural monument in the area of the city of Norden in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony in East Frisia . It bears the number ND AUR 00124.

Description of the area

The extensive natural monument, designated on March 16, 1990, is located in the midst of agricultural areas north of Deichstrasse in Utlandshörn , a district from the north. The wetland is of artificial origin and was created by mining clay to cover the immediately adjacent sea dike . It was then prepared according to nature conservation principles . Today it consists of shallow water zones and headlands . The water depth is a maximum of 1 m. In the bank area, the water is overgrown with dense reed beds .

It consists of two separate bodies of water with reed and sedge zones and an adjacent wet meadow . The district placed the area under protection because of its importance as a resting and feeding biotope, especially for sea birds and waders, as well as a breeding ground for native bird species and its relation to the history of the landscape (small huts near the dike).

The district sees the silting up of the open water surface and the eutrophication by nutrients from the adjacent agricultural areas as special dangers for the water body. In order to counteract this, the adjacent agricultural areas should make extensive use of the marginal strips of the wetland. Silting is to be counteracted by cutting reeds and other measures.
