Stranda is a place and a municipality in Fylke Møre og Romsdal .

Commune

The municipality has Geiranger (approx. 250 inhabitants), Hellesylt (approx. 680 inhabitants), Liabygda (approx. 260 inhabitants) and the capital of the municipality, Stranda (approx. 3500 inhabitants). Stranda Kommune is located by the Storfjord in Inner Sunnmøre . The area is 867 km². The nearby Åkerneset Mountains are believed to be unstable; a landslide could cause a tsunami. That is why it is now regularly monitored by measurement technology. Roar Uthaug filmed the devastating effects of such a tsunami in his 2015 disaster film " The Wave " (original title: Bølgen).

There is a regular ferry connection from Hellesylt through the Geirangerfjord to Geiranger .

Stranda was founded as strǫnd in the early 19th century and got its name from its location on the beach of the fjord, from 1918 also written stranden .

Industry plays a major role in Stranda, especially the furniture and meat industries. In Stranda are both the largest and most modern Pizza Factory ( Doctors Cave ) and the most advanced Abdeckerei Norway. There is a ferry connection across the fjord here.

Notable buildings in Stranda are the town hall, a wooden church from 1838 as well as two other religious institutions and a cultural building for the public library and a cinema. Stranda has two secondary schools, one is the private Christian Vestborg vidaregåande skule and the other is the public Stranda vidaregåande skule . The main street also leads past a larger sports stadium.

Churches in the commune

The Church of Norway has four church buildings in the region . They belong to the diocese of Møre. Besides the above-mentioned church in Stranda, there are the Liabygda kyrkje (inaugurated in 1917), the Sunnylven kyrkje in Hellesylt (inaugurated in 1859) and the Geiranger kyrkje from 1842.

The modern coat of arms was designed by Jarle Skuseth and officially introduced on May 2, 1986. The triangular diagonally arranged surfaces symbolize fjords , mountains and the beach.
