The Matutum is a volcano on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines . It is located 15 kilometers north of the municipality of Polomolok , South Cotabato and about 30 kilometers north-northwest of the city of General Santos . On the northeast flank of the mountain is one of the springs of the Buayan River , which drains the region around the Matutum to the Bay of Sarangani .

Volcanism

The Matutum is one of the 22 active volcanoes in the Philippines and lies within the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire . It is a stratovolcano with a height of 2,286 meters and a base diameter of 25 kilometers. A crater 320 meters wide and 120 meters deep has formed on the volcanic summit.

Reports of a phreatic explosion on March 7, 1911 are considered unsecured. The last known eruption is dated to the late 13th or early 14th century using the radiocarbon method .

Mount Matutum Protected Landscape

The Mount Matutum Protected Landscape was declared on March 25, 1995 with the ratification of Presidential Decree 552 under Fidel Ramos . The protected area comprises a forest area of ​​14,000 hectares, of which 3,000 hectares are part of the core inventory. It covers an altitude band from 1,290 to 2,270 meters above sea level and is classified as a mountain forest.

The protected area around the mountain is an important refuge for the Apolori ( Trichoglossus johnstoniae ), the gray-breasted mistletoe ( Dicaeum proprium ), the Bartlett's dagger ( Gallicolumba criniger ) and the Philippine eagle ( Pithecophaga jefferyi ). The Matutum red breast flycatcher ( Ficedula hyperythra matutumensis ) is even endemic to the Matutum. A total of 110 plant and 57 animal species have been found at the Matutum.
