The gray-breasted mistletoe ( Dicaeum proprium ) is a species of bird from the mistletoe- eater family (Dicaeidae). It is endemic to the Philippines island of Mindanao .

features

The gray-breasted mistletoe reaches a size of 9 centimeters and a weight of 10.2 grams. In the male, the skull and the top are blue-black with a greenish sheen. The wings of the hand are dark brown. The chin and the chin stripe are gray-white. The cheek stripe is blue-black. The rest of the underside is light sepia brown. The flanks are darker and grayer, the under tail-coverts are lighter and grayer. The breast tufts are white. The iris is brown or reddish-brown. The beak is black or dark horn-colored. The legs are black or dark brown. In the female, the skull and the top are dark black-brown with a slight sheen. The throat is white with a slight brownish wash. The underside is darker. The breast is slightly reddish. The belly and flanks are lighter. The young birds have not yet been described.

distribution and habitat

Occurrences of the gray-breasted mistletoe are known from Mount Apo , Matutum , Mount Piapayungan, Mount Sugarloaf in the province of Lanao del Norte and Lake Sebu . It inhabits primary and secondary forests as well as forest edges above 900 meters, especially near fruit trees and flowering trees.

Way of life

Little is known about his way of life. The diet includes fruits, nectar and pollen from belt flowers (Loranthaceae)

Existence and endangerment

The gray-breasted mistletoe is described as uncommon or rare, but appears to be relatively common in some areas of Mindanao. BirdLife International classifies him in the early warning list ( near threatened ).
