Siargao is an island in the east of the Philippines , which belongs to the Philippine province of Surigao del Norte and is located in the Philippine Sea .
The area of Siargao is 416.1 km². The teardrop-shaped island is hilly with low inclines, the highest point is 291 m. Siargao consists mostly of limestones , basalts in the center and young alluvial soils on the coasts with sandy beaches and mangrove forests in the south and west. Rainforest grows inside .
The island is part of the large nature reserve Siargao Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape (SIPLAS).
The largest town and port is Dapa in the south with 23,787 inhabitants, a well-known seaside resort is General Luna in the south-east, often abbreviated as GL.
To the west is the island of Dinagat and to the south Bucas Grande and the main Philippine island of Mindanao . Directly off the coast in the west, only separated from Siargao by narrow channels, are many small islands: Binoscogan, Tona (directly in front of Del Carmen), Laonan, Poneas, Kangbangyo, Megancub and Litalit. In the southeast, in front of General Luna, is Daco or "Daku Island". In the southwest are the Casulian, Abanay, Bancuyo, East Bucas, Monte and Middle Bucas, all of which belong to Dapa. 20 km to the south is an archipelago with the islets Lajanosa, Anajauan, Mamon and Antokon.
The temperature stays around 30 degrees all year round, with December to February being the rainy season. The approximately 200,000 inhabitants speak Surigaonon , which is closely related to Cebuano, and are predominantly Catholic.
There are 8 municipalities on the island :
- Burgos in the northeast
- Dapa in the south, including offshore islands
- Del Carmen to the west
- General Luna in the southeast, including offshore islands
- Pilar to the east
- San Benito in the northeast, including offshore islands
- San Isidro to the east
- Santa Monica to the north
At the end of the 1980s, surfers discovered the “Cloud 9” surfing area at General Luna, which has since become known worldwide. The annual "Siargao Cup" is also held here with international participation.
The Magpupungko rock formation is located in a lagoon near the municipality of Pilar and consists mainly of limestone and granite - erosion has created bizarre sculptures.
The journey takes place z. E.g. by ferry from Cebu to Surigao in about 11-12 hours (overnight), then by boat to Dapa in just under three hours. The island can be reached by plane from Manila , Cebu and Davao . Siargao Airport is located in the municipality of Del Carmen . Until 2008, only 19-seat small planes could land there. Since the runway was extended in 2008, the airport can also accommodate larger aircraft with a capacity of just over 100 passengers.
