Santa Maria is a municipality in the Philippine province of Ilocos Sur and is located on the South China Sea . In the east it borders on the province of Abra . In 2015 it had 30,321 inhabitants. The area is mostly flat. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 . The Marine Research and Development Center of the University of Northern Philippines is located in Santa Maria .
