Orphaned Land (engl., Orphaned land ') is a metal - band from Israel that the elements of metal (mainly Death and doom metal elements, but also influences from other genres) sounds folk mixed with oriental. So it is not uncommon to hear oriental instruments such as oud , darbuka , kanun or corresponding percussion , as well as chants or choirs from the Middle East . The texts deal with the three Abrahamic religions : Judaism , Christianity and Islam .

history

The band was founded in 1991 under the name Resurrection. A year later, the name was changed to the current one, and the musical direction of the band changed to mix oriental sounds with metal. In 1993 they were offered a contract with the French label Holy Records - which they accepted - after their demo The Beloved's Cry was recorded. A year later their first official album, the LP Sahara , was released, and in 1996 their second long-playing record was presented. The title El Norra Alila is a pijjut that is recited at the festival of Yom Kippur to ask God for forgiveness.

In 1997 the band had to take an indefinite break due to the tense situation in Israel. In the same year they got u. a. Offered contracts with Nuclear Blast and Century Media , choosing the latter.

After the break, three concerts were played first, with five acoustic songs added to the limited edition of the third album as a bonus CD. In addition, an EP was released in 2004 with the title, which was also the motto of the three appearances, The Calm Before the Flood .

The third album Mabool - The Story of the Three Sons of Seven ( mabūl is the Hebrew name for the Flood ) was finally recorded between July and October 2003 and is about the "three sons of the seven", the emblematic for sons of Judaism (symbolized by a snake ), Christianity ( lion ) and Islam ( eagle ) standing. The album texts, alternating in English, Latin, Hebrew and Yemeni Arabic, tell the story of the three angels of the seven, with the number seven standing for God. Three angels emerged from God who stand for the three Abrahamic religions. Despite the raging religious war, these three angels try to prevent further bloodshed, but fail and so face the “great storm” that sweeps over the “sinful land”.

In 2005 the EP Ararat was released. Keyboardist Eden Rabin left the band in November of the same year.

In January 2010 the band released the album The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR ; the subsequent tour to OR-Shalem took the band to Europe in autumn 2011.

In June 2012, guitarist Matti Svatizky announced that he was leaving the band for personal and professional reasons.

In June 2013 the sixth studio album All Is One was released , which was recorded for the first time outside of Israel in Sweden and Turkey together with the new guitarist Chen Balbus. The tour schedule, in which the band performed with the Palestinian band Khalas, also caused a stir. The band said they wanted to set an example for international understanding. In 2014 guitarist Yossi Sassi announced his departure.

In December 2017 the band released a version of their song Children together with the German band last instance .

On January 26, 2018, the sixth studio album Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs was released.
