The Augustinian Recollects ( Latin Ordo Augustinianorum Recollectorum , abbreviation OAR ) are a Roman Catholic religious order under the jurisdiction of an institute of consecrated life based in Rome .

history

The Augustinian recollects belonging to the mendicant orders were founded in Spain in 1588 as a branch of the Augustinian Discalceates ; the general chapter was in Toledo . The community bound by the Augustine Rule was approved by the Holy See in 1912 as an independent order and is one of the four central Augustinian orders . The seat of the superior general is in Rome. The term recollects (from Latin recollecti "the gathered") denotes religious orders with strict observance , that is, orders that follow strict rules.

organization

The main institutions of the order include the seat of the superior general, with the prior general, a council of the order and the curia as well as an educational institution. The General House has been in Rome since 1959; it houses the archive with all historical documents, the administration and the personnel department. The international colleague St. Ildefonso and St. Thomas von Villanova was founded in 1616 in the Roman old town and at the same time offers a living area for the students. The students and schoolchildren are prepared here for the further course at universities and three institutes - the Historical Institute , the Institute for Augustinology and the Spiritual Institute . The order of the Augustinian recollects also includes several communities of Augustinian women ( Vita contemplativa ) and sisters ( Vita activa ).
