The Strait of Cebu , also known as the Bohol Strait , is a strait in the Philippines that separates the islands of Cebu and Bohol .
geography
The Strait of Cebu covers an area of 3,933 km² and has a coastline of 264.8 km. The greatest depth is 306 meters below sea level. It connects the western part of the Mindanao Sea (Boholsee) with the Camotes Sea . Its geographical delimitation to the partial seas of the Philippines is by the line Dumaguete City to the northwestern cape of the island Siquijor , from the northeastern cape of the island Siquijor to the island Panglao and the line Minglanilla , on the island Cebu, to the westernmost extension of the Danajon reef system and in a wide arc defined to the municipality of Loon on the island of Bohol. The waters around the Danjon reef system are defined as a peripheral body of the Camotes Sea. Sumilon Island is located off the southeast coast of the island of Cebu .
ecology
The coastline of the Strait of Cebu is relatively straight on the side of the island of Cebu, on the side of Bohol there are numerous islands in front of the coast, such as the island of Cabilao , and the coastline has numerous bays in which large mangrove forests spread. The main freshwater inflow into these bays is in the strait. The mangrove forests cover an area of 10.9 km² and are interspersed with the nipa palm ( Nypa fruticans ). Coral reefs cover a total of 158.6 km² in the Strait of the Sea, of which only 8% are described as having a high biodiversity .
Economical meaning
The Strait of Cebu is an important waterway on which shipping traffic between Cebu City and the northern port cities of Iloilo City and Manila , as well as the southern cities of Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro is handled. It is an important fishing area in the Philippines and aquaculture has been established on an area of 3.8 km² .
