Nuckolls County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Nelson , named after the landowner C. Nelson Wheeler on whose land the city was built.

The county is located in southeastern Nebraska, borders the state of Kansas to the south and has an area of 1,492 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Clay County , Fillmore County , Thayer County, and Webster Counties .

history

Nuckolls County was formed in 1860. It was named after Stephen F. Nuckolls , an early pioneer in the field.

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 11, 2018).

Nuckolls County had a population of 5,057 people as of the 2000 census . 44 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2218 households and 1443 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.91 percent white, 0.02 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian and 0.53 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.32 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.01 percent of the population.

Of the 2,218 households, 26.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.8 percent were married couples living together, 4.6 percent were single mothers, 34.9 percent were non-families, 32.3 percent were single households, and 18.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.86 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 24.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.9 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,958 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 35,018 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,533 versus $ 17,806 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,608. 6.5 percent of families and 11.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. These included 16.7 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 8.9 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
