Pawnee County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Pawnee City .

The county is located in southeastern Nebraska, borders Kansas to the south , is approximately 50 kilometers from Missouri to the east, and has an area of ​​1,121 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Richardson County , Gage County , Johnson County, and Nemaha Counties .

history

Pawnee County was formed in 1854. It was named after the Pawnee people . On May 30, 1879, the Irving tornado hit Richarson County. This tornado reached wind speeds of up to approx. 420 km / h , which means a classification F4 on the Fujita scale . It left a path of destruction that was 750 meters wide and 160 kilometers long. Eighteen people were killed and 60 injured.

Pawnee County had a population of 3,087 people as of the 2000 census . 54 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,339 households and 850 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.9 percent white, 0.2 percent Native American and 0.3 percent Asian; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races.
