McPherson County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Tryon .

The county is located west of the geographic center of Nebraska and covers an area of 2227 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hooker County , Thomas County , Logan County , Lincoln County , Keith County, and Arthur County .

McPherson County was formed in 1887. It was named after the Union General James B. McPherson .

According to the 2000 census , McPherson County had 533 people in 202 households and 157 families. The population density was 0.24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.94 percent white, 0.38 percent Asian and 1.69 percent from other ethnic groups. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.50 percent of the population.
Of the 202 households, 34.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 73.8 percent were married couples living together, 3.5 percent were single mothers, 21.8 percent were non-families, 19.8 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.3 percent between the ages of 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between the ages of 25 and 44, and 22.9 percent between the ages of 45 and 64 18.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,750 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,250. Males had a median income of $ 25,192 versus $ 13,393 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,055. 16.2 percent of the population and 14.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.7 percent were children and young people under the age of 18 and 17.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
