Hitchcock County is a county in the US state of Nebraska . The county seat is Trenton , named after the city of Trenton in New Jersey .

The county is located in southwest Nebraska, borders the state of Kansas and has an area of ​​1,861 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Red Willow Counties , Dundy Counties , Hayes Counties , and Frontier Counties

history

Hitchcock County was formed in 1873. It was named after the US Senator Phineas Warren Hitchcock .

According to the 2000 census , Hitchcock County had 3,111 people in 1,287 households and 899 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.36 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian and 0.29 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.41 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,287 households, 28.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.1 percent were married couples living together, 6.4 percent were single mothers, 30.1 percent were non-families, 27.4 percent were single households and 15.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.80% residents under 18 years of age, 5.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 22.30% were 65 years of age or over.
