Thurston County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Pender , named after John Pender , a railroad director. The county is 100% Reserved by the Omaha and Winnebago Nation.

The county is located in northeast Nebraska, borders the state of Iowa to the east and has an area of 1026 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dakota County , Burt County , Cuming County, and Dixon Counties .
history
Thurston County was formed in 1865. It was named after the US Senator John M. Thurston . In 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in the Nebraska v. Parker that the Omaha Reservation was not legally dissolved by Congress in 1882 and that the county is tribal, not Nebraska, law.
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status that Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte Memorial Hospital . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 12, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Thurston County had 7,171 people in 2,255 households and 1,725 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 45.77 percent white, 0.15 percent African American, 52.03 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian and 0.77 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.23 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.43 percent of the population.
Of the 2,255 households, 40.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 50.6 percent were married couples living together, 19.1 percent were single mothers, 23.5 percent were non-families, 21.3 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.64 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 36.8 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 17.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,170 , and the median income for a family was $ 30,893. Males had a median income of $ 24,792 versus $ 20,481 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,951. 19.3 percent of families and 25.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 32.6 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
