The Cherry County is a county in the US state of Nebraska . The county seat is Valentine , named after Edward K. Valentine , a member of the US Congress .

geography

The county is by far the largest in Nebraska by area and is one of the five most sparsely populated counties. It is located in northwest Nebraska, on the border with South Dakota and has an area of ​​15,565 square kilometers, of which 127 square kilometers are water. history

Cherry County was formed in 1883 on former Indian land. It was named after Samuel A. Cherry , a lieutenant in the US cavalry.

Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Cherry County had 6,148 people in 2,508 households and 1,710 families. The population density was 0.39 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.19 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 3.25 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.72 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.93 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.98.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,268 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,500. Males had a median income of $ 23,705 versus $ 17,277 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,943. 9.6 percent of families and 12.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 13.4 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
