The county is located in southwest Nebraska, borders Colorado to the west and is about 25 miles from Kansas to the south. Chase County covers an area of ​​2,325 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Chase County was formed from part of Hayes County in 1873. It was named after Champion S. Chase (1820–1898), Attorney General of Nebraska from 1867 to 1869.

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Chase County had 4,068 people in 1,662 households and 1,163 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.81 percent white, 0.17 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 3.42 percent of the population.

Of the 1,662 households, 30.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.1 percent were married couples living together, 5.5 percent were single mothers, 30.0 percent were non-families, 27.3 percent were single households, and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 94.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,351 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,225. Males had a median income of $ 27,554 versus $ 17,602 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,490. 7.9 percent of families and 9.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 10.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
